So how about the top 3, Golden Rules, Karma, or Judgment Day? When did they disappear into the sludge of modern-day despicableness down the toilet? I’ve traveled much of the world, and one concept seems consistent. Many people just don’t care about decency, humanity, or accountability.
The most familiar version of the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12). Moral philosophy has barely taken notice of the golden rule in its own terms despite the rule’s prominence in commonsense ethics. One thing that is very evident is the absolute power of the “church,” which can be seen as a glamorous beacon in major cities across the world. Unfortunately, it also seems amnesia sets in the moment the billions of participants walk away from those claimed holy grounds. Some of the meanest, vile humans frequent the holy lands all while conducting themselves in heinous acts of deafening silence towards atrocities. How often have a person been okay with despicable actions towards another human just because they didn’t look like themselves?
Next, we have Karma, in Hinduism and Buddhism, the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. From Sanskrit Karman ‘action, effect, fate. Informal: destiny or fate, following as effect from cause. “There’s something highly satisfying when karma strikes.” Our collective recorded history has been adding up for some time now and one thing seems clear, the offices of karma is either backed-up with paperwork for several centuries; or they filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors. There are way too many colonizers, racists, extremist, bigots, abusers, rapists, thieves, correctional officers, police officers, news anchors, political crooks, clergy, parents, neighbors, CEO’s, bankers, attorneys, judges, governments, and “I didn’t knowers” that are having too good of a time living guilt free while contributing to what none of those hypocrites want to experience for themselves.
At last, many cultures have their versions of spiritual accountability towards the afterlife and possible Judgment Day. And I’m not speaking on the biased judicial system that made laws to protect the one’s who created them. What if at the toll of your life’s deeds the universe didn’t care about your job title. It didn’t care about how much resources you were able to grab and store away to be buried with. It didn’t care that you had the most expensive car, home, yacht, jewelry, etc… Now, think what if only a few questions were asked that you had no choice but to answer honestly or if there’s an eternity worth of consequences.
Question one: Have you been the best human you could be considering the top 3?
Question two: Have you given the world more than you took from it?
Question three: Are you prepared to come back as the recipient of how you treated others?
